Man pleads no contest in molestation of child

An Augusta man who denied his guilt conceded that there was enough evidence for a jury to convict him of child molestation Monday.

Teen reports rape in Columbia County jail

A Martinez teen told police he was raped by his cell mate in the Columbia County Detention Center last week.

The 17-year-old told jailers Friday morning that during the night his 19-year-old cell mate came to his bunk and forcibly sodomized him despite pleas to stop. The teen was taken to University Hospital for a rape evaluation, according to a report from the sheriff's office.

The alleged victim, serving a sentence for a shoplifting conviction and an arrest for terroristic threats and acts, was moved elsewhere in the jail to serve the remainder of his sentence, sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said.

The cell mate, an Evans man in the jail charged with driving with a suspended license and no proof of insurance, is being held on a $2,200 bond.

Officer is fired after violence investigation

A North Augusta Department of Public Safety officer who was arrested on a domestic violence charge last month has been fired.

Brandon Cameron, a three-year veteran, was fired Wednesday after an internal investigation, Lt. Tim Pearson said.

Mr. Cameron, 27, was suspended Nov. 18 -- the day he was arrested by the Aiken County Sheriff's Office on a criminal domestic violence charge.

He was accused of pulling his girlfriend out of a vehicle and throwing her to the ground. She had a contusion on the right side of her head, according to the report.

Reward in monument defacement increased

A reward for information on the vandal who defaced the Confederate monument on Broad Street last month has been increased.

It is now $1,350 for information leading to an arrest, according to Lee Herron, commander of the E. Porter Alexander camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. It was $1,000.

Mr. Herron said the extra money came from the Sgt. Berry Benson camp, which bears the name of the soldier represented atop the monument. Anyone with information can call the Richmond County Sheriff's Office at (706) 821-1080 or (706) 821-1020.

Six years for molesting a two

Six years for molesting a two year old child is insane. That monster should be locked away for LIFE and never allowed to prey on innocent children again. What is it going to take for the legal system to realize that anyone who molests children can NOT be rehabilitated? These predators need to be imprisoned until they die. Period.

It always bothers me when I see an animal like this get such a light sentence. How much of the six will he actually serve? How much time did GA courts give that one young man for sleeping with his girlfriend, and this guy gets six years? Sad Sad Sad.

This light sentence for

This light sentence for molesting a 2 year old child is further proof our justice system is broken and needs to be updated. How sick is this, why would a judge only give him six years? This really speaks to the sanity of the judge!! No amount of prison time, therapy or rehabilitation will change this man. He will spend 6 years thinking about his next victim. Maybe someone in prison will finish him off.

For the teen claiming rape,

For the teen claiming rape, we all know that happens in jails and prisons. That is why they say crime doesn't pay. That is something to expect if you want to be "hard" and be a criminal. Maybe he will think about that the next time he wants to steal something...

I guess no one read the

I guess no one read the police report which you can get online. She was the one with the gun and fired it. She amitted this. He took the gun from her and placed it in the truck. She then tried to get back in the truck were he did pull her out of the truck for her own safety and she fell. She amitted to this too. He is the one who call 911 because he was afraid of her hurting herself. She did not want to press charges. Ya'll need to the read the report before you convicte him without a trial and ruin his life.

I totally disagree with the

I totally disagree with the idea that you should expect to get raped in prison. Yes, you committed a crime, but still...I think the family should have this investigated. Where were the jailers? Watching and laughing? This mentality over rape-whether it's in a home, in a jail, at a dorm-needs to change...

Prison rape has been ongoing

Prison rape has been ongoing since there were prisons and might be impossible to stop. But I am willing to bet my own money that if an inmate who is found guilty of raping another inmate gets himself circumcised all the way back to his scrotum he would tend to abstain from such behavior.

Whyme, I do not take rape as

Whyme, I do not take rape as a joke. It is serious. However if that is what it takes to deter crime then so be it. Jail is not a daycare facility or Disney world. It is a place for bad people who do bad things. It should be a place to be scared of. Which it is not for the most part.

Ok Darla, I didn't hear

Ok Darla, I didn't hear anything about a gun from the news reports or that shots were fired. I heard they had a domestic dispute, crashed a car and she had a bruise on her face. Where are you seeing the report?

I do agree, AV, that the jail

I do agree, AV, that the jail is not supposed to be a resort-hard time, hard labor, serious punishment for crimes. I agree that some time in jail for a teenager who has committed one should be an option. However, our paper fails to include so much info that I really don't know what the real story was with regards to the younger teen's charges. Was he some tough thug who has been living a life of crime and hate? Or did he make a poor choice with no intention of ever doing it again? Was he of a sound mind in the first place-many of our truly mentally ill end up in jail and are further tortured. Either way did he really deserve to be raped? Does anyone? I have not been a victim of this heinous crime but I know that the aftereffects, no matter what, can ruin someone's life much more than merely that stint in jail...and likely will lead to serious behavior issues landing them back...

I can also assure you that if this action had happened anywhere else, people would be outraged...or if this was a 17 year old girl raped by a 19 year old boy...

Whyme, "I totally disagree

Whyme, "I totally disagree with the idea that you should expect to get raped in prison." Who do you think goes to prison? Not normal, mentally healthy, well-adjusted people. The people in prison are vicious, violent animals that have severe personality disorders and mental illnesses. Whyme, when you have a 17 year old convicted as an adult, do you really think that was his first time in the system? Do you think that "terroristic threats and acts" isn't serious?

There you are again, corgimom, you just don't get it. Did you even read my post? Or did you just read the parts that you wanted to comment on.

At any rate, we all have to remember, as I often say, that the AC and other media sources print what it wants in its articles to sell papers and stimulate discussion.
