Man says parole money was home invasion goal

  • Follow Crime & courts

Two men accused of committing a violent home invasion at an elderly man's house did so because one of the accused allegedly needed money to make a payment at his parole office, according to search warrants filed with the clerk's office recently.

Ahijah Murray, 19, and Jonathan Glenn, 28, were arrested earlier this month on charges of burglary, armed robbery, kidnapping and theft. The search warrants sought permission to take DNA samples and fingerprints from both men to compare to evidence found at the crime scene.

According to the affidavits attached to the search warrants, Mr. Murray and Mr. Glenn are accused of being the two assailants who kicked in the back door of George Upshaw's home in the 500 block of Fairhope Street on Nov. 2.

Mr. Upshaw, 68, told investigators he was napping when the door crashed in and he found two men in his home. One wielded a large, stainless steel knife, he said. The men bound his hands and feet with duct tape and threw him in the bathtub, Mr. Upshaw reported. The robbers took $55, a cell phone, Mr. Upshaw's keys and his 1999 Ford Explorer.

Mr. Murray, who was arrested the day of the home invasion, told investigators that robbing an elderly man was Mr. Glenn's idea because he needed $30 to make a payment at the parole office, according to the search warrant. After the robbery, the pair drove Mr. Upshaw's vehicle to the parole office, the warrant continues. It was later found abandoned.

Mr. Glenn was paroled on Dec. 22 after serving seven years in prison. He was convicted in 2001 in Richmond County Superior Court of possession of cocaine and robbery by intimidation.

According to court records, Mr. Glenn was arrested in March for possession of marijuana and was sentenced to serve four months in jail.

Mr. Murray and Mr. Glenn are scheduled for bond hearings this morning in Richmond County Superior Court.

They will be out before you know it. Probation once again. Nothing will be done till they kill someone or the cops take matters into their own hands.

If the mug shots were taken

If the mug shots were taken at the times of the latest arrest, it's possible there were other reasons for the break in. Those are some unnatural looking eyes on both.

That's the dumbest excuse

That's the dumbest excuse I've ever heard. So now this fool is gonna make more time behind bars than he probably would have had he just turned himself in and said he couldn't pay his parole fee. By the way, Notreally, the military doesn't want criminals. Marien, jobs are still hard to come by, especially if you have a criminal record. I do think he should have been looking for a job and not a way to rob an old man, though.

Notreally: Why do want to

Notreally: Why do want to dump losers into the military? They don't want them either! We'll have more wacko recruits like the Major at Ft. Hood, and then after the chaos wonder what happened. No thanks. Keep your thugs in jail where they belong.

Both look healthy enough to

Both look healthy enough to wash cars, rake leaves, or some other kind of manual work. No need to rob an old man. My question is what's a 19 year old young man hanging around a 28 year old convict for... unless it's drugs. Mr. Murray needs to be at work or in college. His downward spiral in life has just begun...stop it before it gets worse so this young man can have a chance to become a productive adult in today's society.

Let me see if I got this right! Paroled on December 22. Arrested in March, then sentenced to 4 months in jail. Shouldn't he have been back in prison for the parole violation?

Just shows our system is not

Just shows our system is not about reform. No justifying those guys actions though. They need to learn responsibility, even if its the tough way. Lock them up instead of parole though.

There is no reform for thugs like this. Their mentality has been demonstrated by their actions. What more needs to be said. Maybe Smith&Wesson need to do a little talking.

Notreally, have you ever been

Notreally, have you ever been in the military? This is a professional organizations and we don't hire criminals to "die for their country." All these guys will do is get kicked out anyway or go to a foreign country and cause an international incident, and you will complain that the military is evil because of the actions of guys like them. Do you really want them to be the embassadors of your country?

Not really - What in the

Not really - What in the world would the military do with a bunch of gang bangers? Use them for target practice? That's not a bad idea! I get so tired of people associating societies' degenerates with the good sons and daughters who volunteer to serve their country. The military does not want our criminal, drug dealing, rapin', robbin' gangbangers. They belong in prisons or perhaps you can take them to work with you?

Never leave your gun more

Never leave your gun more than arms length away when at home. The liberal's pathetic justice system will not take care of criminals so us free and upstanding Americans need to do by killing them one at a time. Arm yourself and help clean up America.

While it is true that a

While it is true that a parole can be revoked on failure to pay the fees, if this jerk had discussed his financial problem with his PO and followed the advice given about employment, he would not be where he is right now. The PO Office has a board in the main lobby that shows what JOBS are available to them; all the individual needs to do is ASK ABOUT IT in order to apply. I don't feel sorry for either of them and whatever is meted out upon conviction, they will have richly deserved the results.
