Shopgirl: Party with your neighbors this Masters Week

WHAT’S NEW

This year, in absence of the traditional Mayor’s Masters Reception on the Augusta Common, a group of local go-getters has planned a fantastic event that looks like tons of fun.

ParTee on the Green is “a dance party with music for all ages – beach, soul, pop, jazz, house, reggae, R&B, funk” according to organizers. Their goal was to create an event that would celebrate community and serve as an excuse to all party together as neighbors during our favorite week of the year.

Karen Gordon (you know her as the head honcho of Garden City Jazz) is leading this effort, and I salute her and the rest of the organizers. We welcome guests a-plenty this time of year, but it’s good to also reach out to our fellow Augustans and celebrate the hometown bond we have. You can find the event on Facebook, but it starts at 5 p.m. Monday on the Augusta Common.

WHAT’S TRENDY

I love the convenience of shopping online, but I hate the guesswork of buying something I haven’t seen or touched. I can always return the item, of course, but more often I find myself driving around with a labeled box in the back of my car for weeks before remembering to drop it off at the post office.

To avoid this inconvenience, I try to read customer reviews on anything that costs more than a little. My new favorite place to do this is RankAndStyle.com, a Web site that curates lists of the best sellers in categories like “Top Ten Blazers Under $100” and “Spring Statement Earrings.” They rank items based on user reviews, bloggers’ tips, best-seller lists, editors’ picks, celebrity favorites, and industry recommendations. No matter what you’re shopping for this spring, give RankAndStyle.com a gander to see what other people have loved.

WHAT’S AFFORDABLE

The best defense is a good offense, and nowhere is that more true than with car maintenance. I hate it, and I’m sure you do too, but I recently found an app that helps keep track of what maintenance and routine repairs are due on your car and alerts you when it’s time. In addition to tire rotations, oil changes and fuel filter replacements, CarMinder keeps track of your gas mileage to alert you to any sneaking problems that might be coming up. Find it in the App Store and get a little more proactive with your car care.
