Shopgirl: Wearable technology can be exciting

  • Follow Smart Shopper

WHAT’S NEW

If you’re keeping up with the quickly growing wearable technology market, you’ve no doubt noticed that the most plentiful manifestation comes in watch or wrist-based form.

From the Nike Fuelband to the Fitbit, all of a sudden it seems like everyone is wearing a watch-like thing on their wrist that isn’t just a watch.

The most exciting thing that I’ve seen in this category is the Samsung Gear Fit. This thing has a screen, communicates with your phone to display notifications and calls, and has all the typical fitness bells and whistles. If you’re too impatient to wait for the Google and Apple smartwatch pipe dreams to materialize, you’ll want to give the Gear Fit a try.

WHAT’S AFFORDABLE

Have you ever been to a museum theater performance at Augusta Museum of History? It’s a fascinating way to learn about figures in the past, and the museum currently has oral history presentations telling the stories of two historical persons.

The Other Tubmans tells the story of how William Tubman, the president of Liberia from 1944-71, has a local connection to slaves freed from the area in the 1830s. A Petersburg Boat Pilot is based on oral histories about James Henry Balchin, who worked and piloted cotton boats from Petersburg to Augusta from the mid-1800s to 1900.

Get more information and performance times at www.augustamuseum.org. Admission to the performances is free with museum admission (only $4 for adults!).

WHAT’S TRENDY

Experience in the fashion industry can be hard to come by, outside of fashion meccas such as Paris and New York City. With the Augusta Mall Fashion Board, Augusta Mall provides a great opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to gain exposure to anything from modeling to community service as the mall’s community ambassadors.

Board members participate in several fashion shows, have monthly meetings and will be coached by professional models and choreographers. Applications are being accepted right now for the 2014-15 year, and you can find the application at www.AugustaMall.com. If you’re serious about working in fashion, this is a great way to start.

The application has plenty of details about the requirements and responsibilities, but if you have more questions call (706) 733-8850. Applications are due March 24.
