Shopgirl: Take a break from social media and just be social

  • Follow Smart Shopper

WHAT’S NEW

We’re all gearing up for the deluge of food photos, present photos, graphics with quotes about Christmas or family laid over them and weather photos that any kind of holiday spare time brings.

Instead of adding to the volume, think about going on a social media “detox” and focusing on the social interaction happening right before your eyes. Temporarily delete your Twitter and Instagram apps from your phone, get a friend to change your passwords if you need to, and you won’t regret it.

WHAT’S TRENDY

Christmas Eve church services can be one of the most beautiful parts of the holiday season. This Tuesday, area churches of all kinds will be holding services in case you are looking for one.

St. Mary on the Hill will have Christmas Eve Mass at 4 p.m., 6 p.m., 9 p.m. and midnight. First Baptist Church of Augusta will hold a family-friendly “Happy Birthday Jesus” service at 3 p.m. Tuesday, and they’re even serving cake afterwards. St. Paul’s Church, the Episcopal downtown church that’s one of the most stunning churches in our area, will hold Festival Holy Eucharist at 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.

WHAT’S AFFORDABLE

Still have some people left on your Christmas list? Be sure to look at The Augusta Chronicle’s Daily Deals before you get a gift card to a big-box chain store or just stick cash in an envelope. Right now, Daily Deals is offering a one-year subscription to Augusta Magazine for just $10, which is almost one-half of the regular $19 rate.

You can buy as many as five subscriptions at this price and give them as great gifts that will keep giving all year long. This is an especially great idea for anyone who might not live in the area any longer but still thinks of it as home.

The Daily Deals store has a great variety of offers, ranging from a spa day to Japanese cuisine. Hurry, though, because they won’t be available for long. Go to dailydeals.augustachronicle.com to see the latest selection.
