September means New York Fashion Week, and this year’s selections were as fascinating as usual, with plenty of details and trends to take home to your closet (even if it isn’t full of names like Nanette Lepore and Zac Posen).

We’re still seeing a lot of geometric and tribal patterns, but in surprising places and juxtaposed with flowy fabrics like organza and with detailed beading. Colors are still fresh and punchy but are a good bit softer than the cobalts and emeralds we saw previously – think more Palm Beach, less nonstop neon.

WHAT’S NEW

iOS 7 has officially dropped, with the most obvious improvement being the slick new visual interface, but there’s a long list of additional upgrades that come with this update.

For starters, FaceTime can now do audio calls and not just video calls. Here’s one of my favorites – your apps now update automatically, so you don’t have to do it yourself. Somehow that always felt like such a chore!

Siri is better, there’s a new AirDrop sharing service for iPhones 5 and up, but enough is also the same that it won’t be like learning a new phone. That’s always a delicate line to walk when it comes to technology.

WHAT’S AFFORDABLE

Hard to believe it’s time to start making plans for fall festivals, haunted houses and Halloween, right?

This year, stop by Nightmare Plantation for a good scary time that also benefits your community. Held on a Grovetown property that owners say is actually haunted, this haunted house donates 100 percent of its proceeds to The Wounded Warrior Project and Channeled Paths, another nonprofit working with at-risk youth. Tickets are only $15, and you can find more info at www.nightmareplantation.net.

RUNWAY TO RETAIL?

After seeing hundreds, maybe thousands, of outfits on the world’s runways this month, what’s going to stick next season?

Fashion editors, stylists and retailers filled the seats at shows in New York, London and Milan, but the looks are beamed everywhere – and pretty much instantly.

You’ll start seeing consumers copying them sooner – and maybe more inclined to shop, said Sally Singer, creative digital director at Vogue. But she still thinks spenders like direction from insiders.

“Ultimately, retailers pick trends. They decide what people will buy because it’s what they believe in to put into stores,” she said. “Things that work at retail are things that might not be from this season’s runway.”

Although London is known for being the most eclectic and unpredictable of the fashion capitals, there were a few themes that emerged last week.

Romance was in the air for many designers, with many catwalks awash in pretty pastels, petal appliques and floral prints and embellishments. All shades of pink were popular.

Asked which looks she expected to see copied in shops in spring, Bay Garnett, a stylist for British Vogue, said: “I haven’t gotten that far yet. I’m just looking around and taking in the ideas.”

Don’t start the shopping list just yet, though. There’s still Paris.
