WHAT’S AFFORDABLE

Running has long been a popular way to raise money and/or awareness for any cause imaginable, but now you don’t need a 5k to help your favorite charity.

Charity Miles is an app on your iPhone that donates money for each mile you run, walk or bike to any of the more than 20 affiliated charities. Bikers get 10 cents per mile and runners and walkers get 25.

All you have to do is open the app, select the charity and start your workout. No matter your passion, from autism research to support for girls in third-world countries, there’s a charity that you can give to just by exercising.

WHAT’S TRENDY

Mark your calendars for Aug. 25, when Augusta Ballet will hold its Bike for the Ballet event.

Bike for the Ballet is not only the only supported training ride on the Ironman 70.3 course before the race in September, but it promotes Augusta Ballet outreach programs including the Anyone Can Dance (& Cook) Camp and their fight against childhood obesity.

Cyclists from all over the Southeast come and practice for the Ironman while wearing fabulous pink tutus and supporting a great local arts organization. If you’re not up to the Ironman, there are two shorter courses. Go to www.augustaballet.org to register or to read more about the event.

WHAT’S NEW

Fury’s Ferry Station will be getting a new clothing store early next month, Low Country Clothiers.

The grand opening is Aug. 17, and it will be carrying brands including Vineyard Vines, High Cotton and Atlantic Drift.

Opening right before football season, it will be a great new place to get game day gear or just great clothes in general. Check it out on Facebook or at www.lowcountryclothier.com to see more of the lines it will carry. It’s good to see Fury’s Ferry Station get a new business – it’s a great central retail location that I hope will continue to grow.
