So much fun – quirky boutique Fab’rik is setting up shop in Augusta. Come by the store in the upper level of Surrey Center on Thursday at 6 p.m. for the grand opening.

Fab’rik is a great addition to our shopping scene, with a great inventory of trendy pieces that are fun to mix into your wardrobe. Most of its pieces cost less than $100, and it carries practically everything from dresses to accessories.

Even before the store opens, like it on Facebook to enjoy fun tips and be in the know about its fantastic giveaways.

WHAT’S AFFORDABLE

Looking for an interesting lunchtime distraction? Forget break-room gossip – head over to the Augusta Museum of History for its monthly Brown Bag Lecture Series.

For $3, you can listen to local experts talk on topics ranging from historic preservation to home cooking as you munch on your brown bag lunch.

On Wednesday, Randy DuTeau will speak on sports in the area. DuTeau, the executive director of the Columbia County Convention and Visitors Bureau, will explain how sports and sporting events have shaped the Augusta area and continue to have an effect.

Lectures run from 12:30 to 1 p.m., and refreshments and beverages are served at 11:30 a.m. If you’re a museum member, you get in free.

WHAT’S TRENDY

Are you like me, and have to remind yourself not to check your phone during dead times?

Our downfall is about to hatch.

LinkMe is a kickstarter project raising funds to create a wristband that flashes text messages and even tweets from your VIPs – girlfriend, dad, boss.

It looks a lot like the Nike+ Fuel Band, and the information will just scroll around your wrist like stock market figures at the bottom of the CNBC screen.

Maybe it’s more discreet than constantly pushing the home button on my iPhone, but I feel like the last thing I need is an even more instant way for the digital world to distract me from the real world.

It’s fun to see communication get even more compact, though, so if you want to support this idea go to www.kickstarter.com and search for LinkMe. It has raised $26,000 of the $100,000 required for the gadget and needs to raise the rest by May 5 in order to get the pledged funds.
