Shopgirl: Black Friday sales are starting earlier

  • Follow Local Business

WHAT’S NEW

If you’re like me, you were a little horrified last year as an even greater number of stores started their Black Friday deals at midnight rather than 6 a.m. or so.

This meant lines started Thanksgiving morning if you wanted to grab the super-hot deals, and do any of us really need a bigger television more than we need turkey and dressing?

This year promises the same kind of scenarios, with Walmart even saying its stores will start sales at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving and Target starting just one hour later.

Macy’s, Best Buy, Kohl’s and other big-box stores plan on starting at midnight at the latest.

If you don’t have plans on Thanksgiving, knock yourself out standing in those lines – the rest of us will be putting away some pumpkin pie.

WHAT’S TRENDY

As you’re ripping through racks this coming weekend, here are a few trends you can be on the lookout for.

I use Black Friday to try on things I might not buy otherwise. With 40 percent off or some other deal I might go for it if I just fall in love with the item (especially nice shoes or outerwear!).

Oxblood, a dark brownish-red, is absolutely going to be the color of the season, and if you can find a small piece to work into your wardrobe you’ll be ahead of the game. Remember that you’ll have a bunch of holiday parties and Christmas card photos to look good for, so if you find a good red sweater or gold dress that’s in your price range don’t pass it up! It’s easy to get overwhelmed on big shopping days and wind up kicking yourself over something the next day.

WHAT’S AFFORDABLE

Unfortunately, there’s a reason Target and the rest of the pack can ask us to stand in line for hours on Thanksgiving. They’re offering some truly fantastic deals that you won’t see the rest of the year on televisions, cameras, iPads and other technology.

Target announced it will have the 50-inch Westinghouse 1080p LCD HDTV at $349, a big cut from the regular price of $600.

Best Buy will sell the 12.1-megapixel Nikon Coolpix S9050 digital camera for just $129.

Try to resist impulse buys, but also try not to get your heart set on a certain doorbuster item. These tech items go very quickly.
