WHAT’S NEW

Motivation is the oft-cited enemy of workouts. Classes at your gym are one way to stay in the rhythm of things, but social networking can help you stay consistent with more solo regimens such as running.

DailyMile.com is a combination running club, twitter, journal and forum for runners who want accountability and organization in their running plan. The site has routes you might not know about in your area, provides a way to get encouragement from fellow runners and even links to official registration sites for notable races.

MapMyRun.com is a treasury of runs that users have uploaded and tracked. For “Augusta, Ga.” there were 106 routes ranging from three miles to 15.7 miles, and from Woodbine Road to Martintown Road. It’s a good way to spice up your routine if you’re getting bored or losing motivation.

WHAT’S TRENDY

One of the most satisfying tips I ever received was to invest in workout clothes that make you look good.

The logic is that if you look horrible working out in an old blood donor T-shirt and baggy sweats, you won’t do it. If you know you look really good in your workout ensemble, though, you will feel more confident and be more likely to head to the gym on a regular basis.

Some of my favorite places to get workout gear are GapBody, aerie, Athleta and North Augusta’s Fleet Feet. GapBody and Athleta let their clothing get to super-discounted prices if you’re patient enough, and I love the fit and quality. Aerie has the best sports bras I’ve ever found, cute enough to not hide but also functional.

Fleet Feet has an extensive inventory and good customer service. They know their stuff from socks to shorts and are always willing to help fit you with the perfect shoes.

WHAT’S AFFORDABLE

Maybe your New Year’s resolution is to widen your cultural horizons. If so, you should check into Regal Augusta Exchange Stadium 20 & IMAX’s Live from the Met series.

The performance Wednesday is an encore recording of Handel’s Rodelinda. The opera tells the story of Rodelinda, queen of the Lombards in the seventh century.

Renee Fleming (at left) plays the title role and is joined by Stephanie Blythe, Andreas Scholl and conductor Harry Bicket.

Encore performance tickets are only $18, a fraction of what you would pay to see the show live. And I’m pretty sure the Met doesn’t sell popcorn.
