Free Shipping Day offers savings for holiday shoppers

If you didn’t find all of your holiday gifts on Black Friday or Cyber Monday, there’s still a chance to get great deals. The fourth annual Free Shipping Day is Dec. 16.

During the one-day shopping event, participating retailers offer free shipping on online purchases with delivery by Christmas Eve. More than 2,000 retailers are projected to participate this year, said Kendal Perez, a representative of Free Shipping Day.

Last year, the one-day event generated $942 million in sales and surpassed Black Friday’s earnings by nearly $300 million, becoming the third-heaviest day of online shopping in U.S. history, she said.

Participating merchants include J.C. Penney, Bed Bath & Beyond, Radio Shack, Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Belk and more. Free Shipping Day’s organizers urge retailers to make shipping offers as broad as possible so that more people will shop, Perez said.

“It’s really grown in popularity as consumers are looking more and more to get free shipping. Right now, people can go to freeshippingday.com and see which merchants are participating so far. But the actual free shipping offers will only be live on Dec. 16,” Perez said. “The event is open to large retailers and small retailers alike. It’s a good opportunity for small-business retailers to participate on a large scale with the bigger stores.”

Free Shipping Day was started in 2008 by the developers of freeshipping.org. The purpose is to extend the online shopping season for merchants and consumers.

“People are pretty weary of ordering online when it gets into mid-December because they’re not sure if it’s going to get to them by Christmas. This is a way to make people rest assured that it will get to them by Christmas Eve …” Perez said.
