Visitor spending in August expected at $1.8 million

  • Follow Local Business

Two Augusta organizations expect the city will draw nearly $1.8 million in visitor spending next month.

The Augusta Convention & Visitors Bureau and Augusta Sports Council said Thursday that visitors attending meetings, reunions and events in August will generate at least $1.78 million in direct visitor spending.

Georgia’s United States Tennis Association’s Mixed Doubles Tennis Championships from Aug. 8-11 is expected to bring the most visitor spending at about $566,000. There will be about 1,100 people attending or participating in the competition.

The CVB and ASC keep a monthly tally of direct visitor spending projections, which are calculated by the number of occupied overnight hotel rooms and money spent by visitors in local hotels, restaurants and stores.

The two groups anticipated about $8 million from July events, led by the Nike Peach Jam and Nike Girls’ Basketball Nationals.

Why doesn't the CVB tell all

Why doesn't the CVB tell all of us exactly how their "estimates" are calculated?

And those multipliers are a bunch of horse apples. They assume everybody stays for the whole thing and that everybody has a single room.

If the CVB REALLY wants to

If the CVB REALLY wants to make some money, they need to have something like a Comic-Con Lite.

The San Diego Convention Center is sold out, and has been for months, and its capacity is 130,000 people.

Now, THAT'S a convention.

Yes and No

The number of occupied hotel rooms above the norm seems like a reasonable way to judge visitors. The other about spending, not so much.
