South Carolina propane company plans to expand into Augusta

  • Follow Local Business

A South Carolina-based propane company plans to cross the state line into Augusta.

Palmetto Propane, headquartered in Batesburg, has filed a site plan with the city of Augusta to build a propane distribution station on Doug Barnard Parkway for trucks serving residential and commercial accounts in metro Augusta.

“Our closest office right now is Aiken, and we’re just moving on into Augusta,” said Clark Havird, a co-owner of Palmetto Propane. “It just kind of fits into our existing markets that we’re already serving and just folds into our existing business pretty well.”

The purchase of about two acres in the 1500 block of Doug Barnard Parkway is contingent on city approval of the plans, which has thus far taken about two months longer than anticipated, Havird said.

After the land is bought, Havird said, it should only take about three weeks to install a 30,000-square-foot propane tank and loading stations on the site. Palmetto Propane has six such facilities across South Carolina.

“One thing we’re really into is auto-gas, which is making cars run on propane,” he said. “That is kind of the intention behind this, is to really grow the auto-gas market in Augusta.”

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, propane is a clean-burning fuel that is nontoxic and presents no threat to soil, surface water or groundwater. Less than 2 percent of the national propane consumption is from transportation fuel.

Formed more than 50 years ago, Palmetto Propane and Havird Oil provide propane gas services and appliances, gas equipment, outdoor cooking products, lubricants and a full line of fuels to residents in South Carolina’s Midlands.
