Texas-based Jason’s Deli is building its first Augusta store in the center at 2907 Washington Road, next to Interstate 20. The 4,500-square-foot restaurant is expected to open by August or September, said company spokeswoman Madison Boozer.

The store will include a drive-through window and employ about 80 people, she said.

The company has stores in Atlanta and chose a site in Augusta based on the area’s demographics and opportunity for community involvement through businesses, churches and schools, Boozer said.

“We try to move into places that will support our business model and where we also can give back to that community,” she said.

About 50 percent of business at Jason’s Deli is catering, Boozer said.

Jason’s Deli was founded in 1976 and operates more than 240 delis across 28 states.

A Whole Foods Market, DSW and HomeGoods already has been announced for the center, which is undergoing a redesign by new owner S.J. Collins Enterprises. Those stores are under construction and scheduled to open this fall.

How dare the anti Augusta

biased Augusta Chronicle report that a sandwich shop is going to open here. Don't you know they only report the bad things about Augusta?

Pretty decent restaurant

There's been a Jasons Deli in Athens for 10 years. It's pretty OK, but Jasons Deli is sort of old news everywhere else. The new big thing that's headed to Atlanta is the Lyfe Kitchen from the west coast. Started by former executives of Mcdonalds, it's going to spawn many imitators.

@Old Augusta

Why would you compare Augusta to Atlanta? That's like comparing Atlanta to London or Paris. Different market sizes will allow for different businesses.

@OJP

I didn't see them comparing anything to anything. Stated an opinion on the restaurant in the story and then mentioned the next big thing restaurant.

I've heard nothing but good things about Jason's Deli from everyone but 'Old Augusta'. Though it does sort of remind me of that PDQ chicken place opening up soon in that we've already got a glut of the same in the CSRA (Jimmy John's, Which Wich, Subway x 200, Firehouse, Jersey Mike's...)

80 People?

Does a deli really employ 80 people? Hard to believe.

I've never been to one but from what I heard they're nice sized restaurants...more on the McCallister's end than the Subway end.

unbelievable

Only in a town like Augusta can the opening of a deli rate a news article in the city's main newspaper's website...and then start a debate among the readers. Next thing you know, a sporting goods store will open, and the same thing will happen...
