Weather causes annual chamber trip to the Capitol to be canceled

  • Follow Local Business

Local chamber of commerce leaders have canceled their annual visit to the state Capitol in Atlanta Tuesday due to the looming winter storm.

Greater Augusta Day, a trip organized jointly by the Augusta Metro, Columbia County and Burke County chambers of commerce, was canceled as weather forecasters are predicting icy conditions to begin Tuesday from the winter storm, said Sue Parr, president of the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce.

The event gives local officials and businesspeople the chance to meet with state leaders.

Parr said she’s looking to possibly re-schedule the trip later this year.

Inside Info

I wonder if Sue Parr got some inside information that the legislature is shutting down Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week because of the storm.

That seems unlikely. If I were in charge of the Greater Augusta Day delegation, I would load up on the bus this afternoon, be sure I had rooms booked in a hotel within walking distance of the capitol building, and show up bright and early Tuesday morning. You know the downtown streets will be clear and the mayor will have personally seen to it that salt and sand is on the streets around the capitol building. It would show the lawmakers that businesses in Augusta mean business — a little snow, sleet, freezing rain does not stop business in Augusta.

Later in the year?

The legislature won't be in session! Just go ahead and spend someone else's money on a trip for your own pleasure.
