Wal-Mart is opening metro Augusta’s first grocery-format store Oct. 2 in a Martinez shopping center.

Employees are spending this week stocking shelves in the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market at 3851 Evans to Locks Road. The store will anchor the Village at Furys Ferry and replace a Food Lion that closed in February 2012.

In May, the company embarked on a
$1.9 million renovation project to transform the vacant space into a prototype of its smaller-scale stores.

“It’s designed for an easy, convenient way for customers to get in and out, and still get the same Wal-Mart prices without having to go the big Supercenter,” said Tim Miller, the manager.

The 36,000-square-foot Neighborhood Market is about one-fifth the size of a typical Wal-Mart Supercenter, which employs about 300 associates. Nearly 100 people have been hired to work at the Martinez store, Miller said.

The nearest market store to Augusta was in Atlanta, Miller said.

The 24-hour store will carry groceries, household supplies, and health and beauty products.

It will have an infant department, pet section and pharmacy.

Miller said other businesses in the shopping center likely will benefit from the market.

“Wal-Mart drives a lot of foot traffic,” he said. “The foot traffic will help all of these neighboring stores.”

Wal-Mart launched the Neighborhood Market concept in 1998 and has since built about 200 stores in the U.S. The corporation announced plans earlier this year to open about 115 Neighborhood Market centers this fiscal year.

Hated loosing the Food Lion

The Food Lion was so close for me but now this might work out better. I hate going to the big Super Center because it is so crowded and you have to walk forever to get things on the other side of the store. Hopefully, it will be a good thing.

I've NEVER spent a penny in a Wal Mart store and I NEVER will. This goes back to the 1980's before I even saw one of their stores in the midwest.
Sam Walton was the greediest man who lived in this country and they are the largest importer of Chinese junk. Their $4 prescription plan utilizes almost entirely imported drugs, many from India. There is nothing there that I can't get at Target, Publix or any of the independent pharmacies in the area.

Wal-Mart

K-Mart, whatever. One day years ago, my wife's grandmother was visiting and ask me to take her to Kay-Roger. She being from North Carolina, I asked her to repeat the name and she did. I told her we didn't have them in Augusta. She said she had seen one. We got in the car and, following her directions, drove straight to Kroger. Kay Roger indeed.

Competition

Sure, there are quite a few homes out that way, but the new Wal-Mart grocery store will be putting pressure on the Bi-Lo, Publix, and Earthfare within a mile from the Wal-Mart. Too many groceries too close together. Something's got to give.

I live pretty close to this

I live pretty close to this Walmart. There is a new housing area going in so maybe the population around it has increased. But if any fold, I predict it will be the Bi-Lo.

From CNBC, 2009

Walmart put this out which means when referring to the stores, simply say Walmart as is on the front of the stores.

"Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. is the legal trade name of the corporation. The name 'Walmart,' expressed as one word and without punctuation, is a trademark of the company and is used analogously to describe the company and its stores. Use the trade name when it is necessary to identify the legal entity, such as when reporting financial results, litigation or corporate governance."

Got it now? Heh.

The Earthfare might be doing

The Earthfare might be doing better now, but they were struggling for a while. They should have just moved to Washington Rd or the Augusta Exchange from the beginning.

I guess they wanted to be around less competition, but hardly anybody shops in this area if Matinez unless you live there.

Well, isn't that normally the case? Hardly anybody shops at the Bi-Lo on Tobacco Road unless they live there.

Bilo (Fury's Ferry) just finished remodelling their interior. The layout is rearranged. The parking lot was resurfaced. Floors and walls redone. It's actually quaint. They could get the beer cooler though.

Yeah, David, that BI-LO is

Yeah, David, that BI-LO is something now. I hadn't been there in a while and when I went there, it was wow. Still, it's not very busy. It's kind of a milk and eggs store for me. I'm looking forward to the Walmart since it's really close to me and I'm hoping the selection will be like all Walmart grocery sections.

By the way, 20 years ago, the Publix, Earth Faire and this Walmart shopping centers didn't exist. That area has had amazing growth.
