The Augusta Economic Development Authority has hired a television reporter to work with existing industry in Richmond County.

The authority’s executive director, Walter Sprouse, said Tuesday that WAGT reporter Jonathan Davis was hired to fill the position created to reinforce relationships with existing companies in the county.

“I know what the message is going to be, but I need somebody who is very good in that communication,” Sprouse said. “Jonathan fit the bill just right.”

About 30 applicants, both locally and from out-of-state, applied for the position in the span of about three months, Sprouse said.

Davis had worked as a reporter at WAGT since 2010 and previously was a producer for Shurz Communications, according to the development authority.

The Paine College graduate begins Monday.

The authority’s Chairman Henry Ingram said in a statement that Davis’ new job is crucial to the organization’s economic development team.

“A large percentage of new jobs created each year come from existing companies, and our goal is to expand those numbers in the years to come,” he said.
