Augusta vacuum refurbishing company adding 80 jobs

An Augusta company that refurbishes vacuums is increasing its workforce nearly sevenfold during the next two months.

America’s Remanufacturing Co., 1219 New Savannah Road, will increase from 15 to about 100 employees by late spring, owner Mark Branum said.

The company signed a contract with TTI Floor Care North America Inc. to refurbish all Hoover and Dirt Devil vacuums returned to major retailers across the country, said Branum, who also owns Branum’s Sewing & Vacuum in Martinez.

Branum’s business was previously under contract for 17 percent of the refurbishing work.

TTI Floor Care said Wednesday that it would close a plant in Juarez, Mexico, and transfer the work to Branum’s facility.

“It’s good for the area,” he said. “Anytime this many jobs comes to this area from Mexico, I think it’s a good thing.”

Branum started America’s Remanufacturing in 2002 behind his store on Washington Road in an attempt to reduce the number of returned vacuums sent to the landfill.

He operates out of a 36,000-square-foot building that formerly housed Augusta Mill Supply Co., and he has rented a 19,000-square-foot structure across the street to serve as a distribution center.

Branum has already added about 35 workers. Many of the jobs that will be added involve work in production and shipping.

“I’ve got to be in full production in two months,” said Branum, who will add two more production lines by April. “The trucks aren’t going to stop coming in.”

In 2012, his company remanufactured 80,000 small appliances. With the new influx of returned vacuums, Branum expects that number to climb to more than 500,000 refurbished products this year.

About 80 percent of the vacuums shipped to the company are refurbished and the
rest end up being recycled locally, Branum said.

The company also refurbishes humidifiers for Guardian Technologies.
