Newest restaurant to Hammond's Ferry fills retail space

Carolyn Myers looked right around the corner when it came time to open her first restaurant.

Having lived in Ham­mond’s Ferry since 2007, the Pittsburgh native felt it would be the perfect place for her new eatery, Brick Pond Market, at 89 Crystal Lake Drive.

“Once I was here, I just loved this neighborhood,” Myers said of the mixed-use riverfront development in North Augusta. “Lots of days I walk (to work).”

The restaurant, open Tuesdays through Saturdays, serves soups, salads and sandwiches. The menu is mostly Myers’ personal recipes, with items like the fluffernutter, a grilled peanut butter, banana and marshmallow sandwich, and PB&J sushi, peanut butter and jelly bread slices wrapped into sushi-like rolls, for children.

Quick desserts, beer and wine also are served at the restaurant, which can fit about 25 diners inside and 25 more outside.

Open for two months, Brick Pond could soon serve diners later into the evening by summer. Myers said she plans to extend her current hours of 11:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. and expand the menu to offer dinner entrees and to-go meals.

“We’re starting to get more of an evening crowd,” she said.

Though Myers previously worked in industrial engineering and real estate, she said cooking and entertaining have always been hobbies.

Myers took a managing position at Rae’s Coastal Cafe in Augusta for 2½ years to decide if she wanted to make a go of running a restaurant.

Before opening Brick Pond, Myers said she polled neighborhood residents to gain insight into what type of food they’d like to see served in Hammond’s Ferry, which is a 200-acre planned conglomerate of single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and apartments mixed with retail and office space.

Other retail ventures opening in Hammond’s Ferry before Brick Pond have been Edge Salon and Spa, Manuel’s Bread Cafe, Edge Formals and Taste. Residential building began in 2007.

With the opening of Brick Pond, current commercial and office space in Hammond’s Ferry is filled, said Ken Newsome, a commercial builder in the development and owner of K.A. Newsome & Co.

Newsome said he’d like to build additional office space in the development but can’t do so until he acquires funding.

“It’s a unique place,” Newsome said of Hammond’s Ferry. “It’s a destination.”

The majority of remaining land in the development designated for commercial is at the Riverfront Center, where plans are currently on the table for a public-private partnership to include a hotel, residential, retail and office space as well as an athletic stadium and conference center.
