Evans steakhouse to become new TBonz

  • Follow Local Business

A steakhouse that has been closed for the past two years is about to become a TBonz.

Tom Jastrom, a partner in the new restaurant, said he expects to close July 26 on the former Stonecrest Southern Steakhouse location, which shut its doors in July 2010.

“We had been looking for a while over there,” Jastrom said.

The 5,000-square-foot restaurant at 601 N. Belair Road needs minor renovations and could be open within a month or two of the purchase date, Jastrom said.

“It’s mostly just cosmetic,” he said of the work needed on the building.

As many as 40 to 50 employees could work at the new TBonz Steakhouse.

Stonecrest opened in October 2007 with hopes of becoming a chain of franchise steakhouses.

This is great news!

My family misses Stonecrest so much. We look forward to TBonz's opening and will be supporting them.

Franchise

Stonecrest did join a franchise chain — the chain of failed restaurants.

I know that wasn't kind, but it just popped into my mind. (Hey, I'm a poet, but don't know it.)

Seriously, two or three years ago, County Commission Chairman Ron Cross was quoted in the Columbia County News-Times that he wished some “upper-scale” (his term, not mine) restaurants would re-locate to Evans. Then he listed three examples of what he was talking about:

Carrabbas
Bone Fish
Red Lobster

I kid you not. Well, anyway, it will soon be time to celebrate Ron's almost getting his wish. It's not Red Lobster, but T-Bonz should be an acceptable substitute.

Red Lobster...upscale? Good

Red Lobster...upscale? Good grief. I am amazed that RL is always packed. The food is so-so and the prices high for what you get. I ate there one time last year (hadn't been in years) and I was like, "what's the big deal."

The catch at Red Lobster (no

The catch at Red Lobster (no pun, well maybe a little) is those dang blasted garlic biscuits. I can't resist when butter, garlic, and bread party together.

Have missed T-BoneZ since they abandoned the South Side

Great place for a constantly great steak dinner and many other great foods.

The only short coming was their specially made loafed bread.
But maybe they changed the bread in the last few years.
The Washington Rd location and traffic was too much to handle for a meal.

Especially with Apple bee's serving a very good steak dinner and meal on the South Side, why bother risking life and limb on Washington Rd. or the gas?

I wish them well. Stonecrest

I wish them well. Stonecrest had excellent food and I never had any issues with service. Their location was just too hidden from Washington Road and it wasn't the easiest to access, either.

Stonecrest and T-Bonz are both overrated. Stonecrest too pricey for what you got. And not sure how T-Bonz has gotten voted best steak in Augusta 20+ years in a row... I can name plenty of other places with better steaks. Not that they are bad, just not the best in Augusta. IMO

Waffle House

has some great steak. Nothing like a Waffle House t-bone and a coupla eggs over light with a side of grits and some toast.

Served with a Mason jar full of Boone's Farm Strawberry, this meal is the gastronomical equivalent of Nirvana.

Does anyone know good food here????

Applebee's great steak?? Are you kidding me? WaffleHouse? No wonder why there are no good eateries around here just run of the mill chains because I guess people don't know the difference. jezz.

The reason locals struggle

The reason locals struggle and chains succeed should be obvious to anyone. It takes several years of operating with no profit to get a restaurant or any new business going. It's unfortunate that Stonecrest closed. There was not that much difference in their prices and Longhorns or Bonefish. They excelled in customer service and offered a pleasant atmosphere. We visited often.
I would have preferred a Bonefish but am grateful it's not Red Lobster. No biscuit eater, here.

@ DMPerry

Yeah, but you either have to BYOBoones Farm or take the steak and eggs home. Not very relaxing, but I can relate.

Actually, it's not so much a pain to get to, but it is a pain to get out of!

Reconfigure the road

Anybody who uses that area is going to find that North Belair Square is going to have to be re-configured. The traffic in that little area will be awful, especially at the 4 way flashing light.

I liked Stonecrest and the bread pudding was awsome. Try Rae's Coastal Cafe off Walton Way for a great filet, the old Green Jacket salad and Mango Pie. UMMM Good. Small place but cozy and good clientel.

Jake's Steaks

I prefer my own steaks because I can hand select the cuts from the butcher, grill them to my taste, drink a hearty Cabernet that I have been saving for such a meal without paying mark-up and have my dining companion sit in my lap when I am finished eating. Burp!
