Bird Dog Grille opens in Evans shopping center

  • Follow Local Business

Bird Dog Grille has opened in the Village at Furys Ferry shopping center in Evans, serving a mix of Southern favorites and healthful cuisine, and its owner says the absence of anchor store Food Lion has not hurt business.

Owner Brett Hilton, who has worked in the restaurant industry for several years, said he chose the property because of its convenience and visibility.

When Food Lion closed in February, Hilton said, the shopping center didn’t experience much of a drop in traffic.

“The Food Lion really wasn’t bringing that much traffic in by the time they had decided to close,” he said. “I felt like Little Caesars brought more in than Food Lion.”

The restaurant is in space previously occupied by Tao Asian, and Hilton said the property was already in great condition when he acquired it and didn’t take much work to transform it into what he envisioned for his restaurant.

The name of the restaurant came from suggestions when he was thinking of opening a restaurant. At first, he thought about opening a specialty hot dog restaurant and then a poultry-only restaurant.

He settled on an outdoors theme, and combined both ideas to create the Bird Dog Grille.

Hilton has 16 employees.

Ironically, the Food Lion

Ironically, the Food Lion closing at Old Petersburg road has left that center barren. Drive-up dry cleaner keeps plugging along and it appears there is some kind of kid's venue for creative play. Mostly though, it is a parking lot to park and sell your car.

I have also transitioned to eating more fast food and less cooking b/c I don't have a jiffy little grocery store to get in and out fast. It isn't the way I would have planned it, but it is what it is. Thank goodness I only have to drive up to CVS at Baston Road to grab a frozen pizza, any further and I'd be paying sales tax to Richmond County. Eventually, I will transition like everyone else and make the trip to Publix and park and roam the aisles. The tricky part is getting back over onto Old Evans. You can take your life in your hands and attempt the "left" or pull into what's left of the suicide lane to make your left into Brown Feed and Seed cut-through. Either way, you're like a grape in a Mister Miagi metaphor.

Regarding Bird Dog, I'll see you this week for a test drive. Adult drinks available?

Question... A 'bird dog' is

Question... A 'bird dog' is a common name for a chicken filet in a hot dog bun...sometimes with cheese and bacon on it. Do they actually serve "bird dogs" like this, or is the name just a name? There was a joint in Anderson, SC that served these and they were amazing. Just wondering if there's a local spot that has 'em now.
