One of Augusta’s oldest real estate names is on the crest of the technology wave with a newly released iPhone application.
Joe Edge, the owner of Sherman and Hemstreet Real Estate Co., said the app isn’t just a mobile version of the Web site, but a specialized search engine for customers.
The app lists properties for lease or sale and uses location technology to sense where the user is in relation to properties. By tapping the icons on the map, users can see more details and contact the broker handling the property.
The app, available for iPhone and iPad, was released about one week ago. Edge said he’s hearing good reviews from customers and property owners.
“We’re getting a really good response from it, and we’ve tried to include everything they might need or think of,” he said.
Sherman and Hemstreet has been in Augusta since 1924, Edge said, and has 325 commercial properties listed in the Augusta area. The firm was awarded a bid to sell Augusta-Richmond County’s surplus properties in November 2011 and is co-listing those with Blanchard and Calhoun Commercial.
Staying current, Edge said, is the key to maintaining a steady flow of business in a down economy.
“We’re always looking to find new ways to aggressively market the properties to people,” he said. “The way real estate is now, you have to be even more aggressive.”
Edge said it took four months to develop the app. A version for Android-based devices is being developed.
