The Gerald Jones Auto Group announced Tuesday that it has acquired the rights to sell Mitsubishi cars in Augusta and will do it at its Mazda dealership on Gordon Highway.
Auto group president Andy Jones said the cars were delivered Friday, and a few have been sold.
The rights to sell Mitsubishi were previously owned by the Stokes-Hodges Auto Group, which operates a Kia and Acura dealership on Gordon Highway.
Jones said about eight people will be hired in sales and service. Letters will go out to registered Mitsubishi owners in the Augusta area that there is a place for warranty work, Jones said.
The Japanese automaker fits in the family of import car dealerships, comprised of Honda, Subaru and Mazda. The auto group also sells Audi, Volvo and Volkswagen.
“It offers some stuff that I did not have,” Jones said of wanting Mitsubishi. “One, a little bit smaller, little bit inexpensive car with all the current technology – paddle shifting and Bluetooth plug-ins.”
Jones, who was at a Mitsubishi conference in California on Tuesday, said the carmaker also has an electric car, which he will see demonstrated Wednesday.
