Sweepstakes offers free fuel for a year

  • Follow Local Business

To help consumers save on the road this summer, Shell has launched the "Favorite Road Trip" sweepstakes. Through Sept. 5, consumers can enter to win one of 10 prizes of free fuel for a year. They should submit a short story of their favorite road trip route or memory for a chance to win.

Every week, one winner will be randomly selected to win a year's supply of free Shell Nitrogen Enriched gasoline. Daily winners will also be randomly selected to win a $100 Shell Gift Card.

The free gas for one year is calculated as the average consumer's yearly gasoline consumption of 566 gallons at an average present-day cost of $3.781 per gallon, which equals $2,140 worth of fuel. Fluctuations in gas prices will not affect the prize amount, according to a release. For more information about the sweepstakes, visit www.shell.us/roadtrip.

Children's menu items are regularly $4.50. The meal includes three wings, a hot dog or hoagie, along with small fries and a drink.

POLICE AUCTIONS

Deals at Web Site: A PR rep recently contacted me about a police auction Web site called www.propertyroom.com. She said that consumers can find great bargains on items from Gucci sunglasses, iPods, jewelry, coins, mountain bikes, fishing rods and more.

The online auction was started 10 years ago by ex-officers who have relationships with more than 2,400 police stations and municipalities. They pick up unclaimed items in property rooms and sell them on the site.

Consumers get up to 80 percent off the market value of items, and police stations get a share of the profits. Most items start with a $1 bid, and all merchandise is verified for authenticity, she said.

TRAVEL DISCOUNTS

HOTEL COUPON BOOK: Through August, guests at Red Roof Inn will receive a coupon book at check-in, while supplies last. The book includes national retail coupons and discounts for restaurants and services.
