If you'd like to save money for college, pay down a student loan or simply receive a check, try out a program called Upromise.

Upromise by Sallie Mae rewards members with money for college when they make eligible purchases from hundreds of participating companies, said Debby Hohler, director of corporate communications for Sallie Mae. The program is free to join and members can earn money when they shop online, book travel, dine out, buy groceries or even purchase a home.

The cash earned from spending with Upromise partners goes into a Upromise account and can be invested in a tax-deferred 529 plan, deposited into a Sallie Mae high-yield savings account, used to pay down a student loan or requested by check, Hohler said.

In Georgia, members have received more than $14.5 million in total contributions to their accounts. There are currently 2,300 participating stores in Georgia and more will be added later this month, she said. To sign up, visit upromise.com.

Shoppers can earn up to 25 percent when they shop online via upromise.com or Turbosaver at more than 800 online retailers, including American Eagle Outfitters, Banana Republic, Barnes&Noble.com, Borders.com, David's Bridal, Expedia.com and more.

Restaurant patrons can earn up to 8 percent of their total bill, including tax and tips, when they pay with a credit or debit card they have registered with Upromise. At the grocery store, Upromise offers eCoupons on everyday items. Shoppers can visit upromise.com to register their grocery or drugstore cards and shop for products at a participating grocery or drugstore. When they scan their registered store card at checkout, the savings will be automatically credited to their Upromise account.
