Discounts might help you get fit in new year

Several local health clubs have discounts to help you to fulfill your New Year's resolutions to meet your fitness goals in 2010.

At the Family Y, new members won't have to pay a joiner's fee through January. This equals savings of $75 to $100, depending on whether you get an individual or a family plan.

The Family Y doesn't require contracts, according to an employee. The fitness center also has discounts for seniors (62 or older). For access to all Family Y branches, seniors can pay $32 for an individual and $48 for a couple.

The Augusta area has seven Family Y's: Augusta on Wheeler, Tobacco and Milledgeville roads; Thomson; Evans; North Augusta; and Aiken.

Health Central Wellness & Fitness Center on Broad Street is waiving its enrollment fee through January when people sign a one-year contract. The enrollment fee is usually $69 or $99, depending on corporate or individual membership.

The gym has a three-month membership special for $129, which is available through January.

Gold's Gym in North Augusta and Aiken is offering membership for $19.99 a month. No contracts are required. The offer lasts through January.

Anytime Fitness is giving customers 25 percent off its memberships. The gym is reducing its enrollment fee by half through this month. In total, a member could save more than $100 on a 12-month membership.

The health club has three-month to 15-month memberships. Prices start at $30. The membership provides access to Anytime Fitness' 1,300 gyms nationwide and a Web site that enables customers to track their fitness and nutritional needs.

Anytime Fitness is on Fury's Ferry Road and Columbia Road in Martinez and on Georgia Avenue in North Augusta.

At Omni Health & Fitness Center, new members who have never been a guest can become a member for only a $1 join fee.

There are no join fees for members who enroll in personal training. With personal training programs, members will also receive free fitness assessments, regularly $55 each, and free nutritional programs, regularly $59 a month. All deals are available through January.

Omni Health & Fitness has gyms on Walton Way Extension and on Evans to Locks Road.

The Fitness Gallery & Spinning Center is offering its corporate price of $70 a month for unlimited spinning at both centers, Old Petersburg Road in Martinez and Broad Street in Augusta, if three people from a business attend. Individuals can get 12 visits for $70 a month. That offer doesn't expire.

The gym has a new 50-minute Spinnervals class: 30 minutes of spin class with 20 minutes of circuit training for $15 per class. Until Jan. 29, customers can attend the three-day-a-week class in Martinez for $150, which results in two free classes.

RECAP

Here are some highlights from The Pinch blog last week:

Let's Get Financially Fit: As you're making your New Year's resolutions, don't forget to set financial goals. Here are some examples to consider:

1. Reduce your spending (eating out, wasting fuel from poorly planned errand trips or costly expenses such as premium cable channels). Make a list of your expenses for a month to determine where your money is going.

2. Save more money. Pledge to set aside a certain amount of money from each paycheck.

3. Create a debt-repayment plan. Assess your credit card debts and make a plan to pay them off starting with smaller debts first.

4. Bring in extra income. Get a second job or find something you're good at doing. Perhaps you have a talent for baking cakes, doing yard work or cutting hair.
