Realtor association opens new facility

  • Follow Local Business

The area's association of home sellers has opened its own new home.

Hundreds of members of the Greater Augusta Association of Realtors attended the official opening of the Roy Road office Wednesday.

Construction on the $1.6 million building started in August, financed by saving for the project over five years, said Tom Horner, the association's building committee leader.

The highlight of the 6,500-square-foot building is the 100-seat training center.

"We have to have continuing education, most of us that are not grandfathered in. We have state and national instructors that come in here and teach the classes," said association President Nita Sawyer.

With the additional office space, the association no longer needs to rent facilities to conduct the training, she said. The association has more than 1,300 members. The office also contains a computer room for new agent training.

"We tried to design this so that no matter what size broker you are -- mom and pop to a large one -- that you had the facilities to take care of this," Mr. Horner said.

Training was done in-house before.

"But no one had a computer; they watched a videotape," Mr. Horner said.

With its location off Wheeler Road near Interstate 20 and Bobby Jones Expressway, it is easily accessible to agents in south Augusta.

No, this Tom Horner did not

No, this Tom Horner did not pitch for the braves back in the 80's! He is not old enough to have done that. Tom used to be with Sherman and Hemstreet GMAC until it was sold to B&C a few years ago.

Bob Horner was the Braves'

Bob Horner was the Braves' third baseman, but who exactly paid for this building? Could it be the real estate companies who want to keep the sales people coming and going? That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I'm just saying.....
