Synovus/Augusta First Bank & Trust on Monday announced the appointment of Jody Patton as president of Augusta operations – operations that by March will completely adopt the parent company’s brand.
Patton joined Augusta First Bank & Trust as senior vice president when it was first chartered under the Columbus, Ga.-based Synovus Financial Corp. system in 2005. The bank will operate under the Synovus flag exclusively when branch office signs are changed March 5.
“We’ve been working on that for really over a year,” Patton said, referring to rebranded credit cards, bank statements and other materials. “So really the last thing that needs to be changed is the signage.”
Tat Thompson, the bank’s former longtime market president, will become chairman of its local advisory board at the bank’s newest branch office in the Sutherland Mill building.
“No one is better positioned to succeed an Augusta bank legend like Tat than Jody, and we are confident that customers and team members will be in great hands under his leadership,” Synovus’ Northeast Georgia Regional CEO Bill Douglas said in prepared remarks.
Patton has more than two decades banking experience, including commercial real estate lending, new business development and sales management. His commercial lending duties will be taken over by Kevin J. Glass, an Augusta native and former First Citizens Bank executive who joined Synovus in September.
The bank said the elevation of Patton to market president was part of a “long-standing” succession plan for Thompson, a lifelong banker who was part of the senior management team of Allied Bankshares, which is now a part of the Regions Bank network.
“I’ll probably retire at the end of June, but I’ll still have an office at the bank and still be active in the community,” Thompson said during an interview Monday.
“He’ll always be around,” Patton said jokingly.
Patton is a graduate of the University of Georgia and serves on the boards of directors for the American Heart Association’s Heart Ball, the Builders Association of Metro Augusta and CSRA Business Lending.
Georgia-chartered Synovus operates 250 branch offices in five states. The company’s third branch office in Augusta, to be located on the first floor of the Sutherland Mill building, will house the company’s executive offices as well as the new private wealth management operation headed by former SunTrust executive Natalie Schweers.
“We’ve got a great team in place,” Patton said.
