An Augusta property developer intends to buy three “distressed” apartment complexes in the area to restore and renovate them.
The Mullins Cos. announced its plans Friday.
Baywood Apartments, at 2413 Baywood Dr., is in south Augusta, about a half-mile from the abandoned Regency Mall.
Cascade Apartments, at 2511 Cascade Dr., is near Daniel Field and the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center.
Conifer Apartments, at 140 Conifer Dr. in North Augusta, is a block east of Knox Avenue where it turns into Edgefield Road.
Joe Mullins, founder and CEO of The Mullins Cos., said the names of the complexes will change when the projects are completed.
“I believe in south Augusta and I feel like that community has a niche and can be restored using some of the benefits of what’s coming into our area,” Mullins said, noting the addition of cyber, students and medical facilities. “Regardless of what happens at the old Regency Mall, I believe enough attention has been brought to the area to know something needs to happen. My hope is that something will come in to bring lots of jobs to restore that area.”
Laura Bridges, property manager for The Mullins Cos., said there are 62 apartments in the three complexes. The developer hopes to close on the properties next week, she said.
Renovation plans include introducing fiber Internet, cable, telephones and a fitness membership all included in rent.
“I believe in these areas, and with all this coming to the Augusta community, I believe that if areas like these are restored and marketed properly, we can revitalize them,” Mullins said.
