Augusta saw fewer layoffs in January

Initial claims for unemployment insurance, a measure of layoff activity, declined in January for metro Augusta, the Georgia labor department reported Thursday.

There were 2,013 first-time claims for unemployment benefits in the six-county area in January, a 26 percent decline from December. It also represented a 12 percent decline from January 2013, according to labor department data.
