March tourism projected at $3 million

  • Follow Business

Visitors to Augusta in March are expected to generate $3 million in direct visitor spending.

The top two events projected to bring in the most spending are the Voter Registration Association of Georgia’s annual meeting and a conference for the East Central Georgia Emergency Medical Service. Combined, the events are expected to draw 1,100 people and generate about $1.1 million, according to a monthly report compiled by the Augusta Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Augusta Sports Council.

The bureau bases direct visitor spending on the number of occupied overnight hotel rooms and factors in money spent by visitors in local hotels, restaurants and retail stores.

Last March, the bureau anticipated the city’s tourism to produce $1.8 million.

Good job!!!

The tourism field of Augusta is still very much underused.. The Riverwalk, Augusta Common, and the amphitheater can hold several additional events... The GRU day held downtown is a good start and we need the increased 'cosmopolitan feel'..

The city needs to build a performing arts center and new arena to help keep up with the growth.

The existing attractions(TEE Center, Riverwalk, etc) and the new amenities(outlet mall, cabelas, etc) will only help the situation..

The waterpark proposed in the upcoming splost would easily put Richmond County over 2 million visitors per year(1.5 currently).. South Augusta can use the growth and somewhere off I-520 is the perfect spot. Please don't build the water park at Regency mall(concentrate on higher education, offices, residential, and recreation there) or Diamond Lakes which can't provide the necessary infrastructure..

Hey, Noc, that's especially interesting since the East Georgia EMS only represents 12 counties. How many people are attending?
