Jobless claims lower in August for Augusta metro

Initial claims for unemployment insurance in the Augusta metro area for August was 15 percent lower than a year ago, according to data released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor.

There were 1,364 initial claims, an indicator for local layoff activity, in August, down from 1,620 in August 2012. There were 2,617 first-time jobless claims in July, which usually goes down in August as school resumes.
