ATLANTA — A group of fast food workers in Atlanta is planning to walk off the job to push for better wages.

Atlanta Jobs with Justice Officials say employees at several chain restaurants in the city are planning to walk off the job Thursday to push for unionization and hourly pay of $15.

Organizers say Atlanta is home to more than 77,000 fast food workers who earn median wages of about $8.50 to $10.70.

Organizers say the walk-out in inspired by seven similar strikes across the country earlier this summer. Organizers say local clergy, elected officials and community supporters are expected to join the strike.

Demonstrations are being planned at the Five Points MARTA station in downtown Atlanta, and at a McDonald’s and Church’s Chicken in southeast Atlanta.

Great idea. Prove to your employer that you're worth $15 an hour by walking off the job. These employees knew what they were being paid when they applied for the job and accepted the position. If I was the employer, I would pay the workers that don't strike $15 an hour, and reduce the strikers pay if they decide to return.

Who will make my egg McMuffin? I don't think they ought to be doing that with a 15% unemployment rate int ATL.

Judging from past service and ability to get the order right.

The ordered walk off should take a 30 to 45 days to be filled and they'll walk off and forget the fires.

BTW:
Is Obama's SEIU behind this?

Please walk off. The unemployment rate is too high, you can not draw unemployment checks if you quit and the new replacments will be off the dole. Win, Win!

Maybe the wrong group is on

Maybe the wrong group is on strike. Considering the awful service and bad attitude we encounter, I say it's the customer that should go on strike - beginning today.

This is Georgia

Georgia is a right to work state that is not in union control. If my employees walk off thinking they are striking, the following day I will have new people who no longer have to collect unemployment. Seriously $15 an hour? In the words of Stanley from the Office... "Have you lost your da*m mind"

If you want $15 an hour,

If you want $15 an hour, better yourself with some more education, stop having kids and EARN it. Fast food is not a $15 an hour job, nor is it worth any more than minimum wage to start. You knew that going into it, and you accepted it. Now live with it or get yourself out of it!

be the obama system. Just because you didn't want to graduate from 1st grade because you were raised on welfare, now that you have reached the age where you have to earn REAL money but are too stupid because of your lack of an education, you want me to pay you $15.00 an hour. Bite Me!

more entitlement mentality ....

Want more pay? Get an education and then get a better job. If you want better pay then make the sacrifice of going to school, get an education that will lead you a better job. This is the epidemic of the entitlement mentality: I want more with out doing the sacrifice. I want the A even thought I did not do the research nor put any effort into writing it. I want the medal just for playing. I want to diploma just for sitting in school. I want the big car and the big house eventhough I do not deserve it. I want to raise just because I sit at this desk year after year. We have created a generation of spoiled brats that want everything for nothing. We reap what we sow. - Yes, we all agree that wages should be just, but $15!!! For Fast food work!!! Please ...... If you want more pay then go for extra training, advance in your position, make a SACRIFICE and get results. Don't expect more for doing the same.

If they actually received this $15.00/hr wage; the customer's WOULD be the ones to go on strike, because prices for the food would skyrocket!! Do you really believe the owners would take the hit themselves? No, they would pass the cost down to the customers, by raising prices.

NO WAY are people going to pay $10.00 or more for a "Value" meal at a fast food restaurant!!! The prices are too high anyway. Fast food restaurants tout their low prices, but that's only for TINY items on the menu that will leave you hungry and hour later!! If you want one of the bigger meals, that will fill you up; you're already paying $8.00+ for that meal.

I understand people wanting to get paid more, but this is ridiculous!! Many law enforcement agencies are adopting the policy of requiring associate degrees; but even then, starting salaries are between $14.00-$16.00 an hour!! These people are wanting to get paid what many people with degrees get paid!!

God love them, I hope they do.

Because then people who want to work will be able to get a job.

$15.00 per hour to stick a cup under a spout, and push a button.

OK.

I won't notice.

I don't eat that junk. Stay away. McD's and Church's are two of the reasons for our obesity rates. Nothing but readily available junk food. It does not take that much time to make something worth putting in your body.

Walk out

I would be more concerned about what they could do with your egg McMuffin while it is being prepared, and for that reason I rarely eat at a fast food restaurant unless it is Arby's or Chic-fil-A.

ripped from the other "strike" post

Instead of paying their share toward welfare, the corporation pays a smaller wage and banks super-profits. Who pays into the welfare that gets handed to the entitlists? Yep, me and you. Let the fast food industry burn or make them pay rightfully into welfare since they are a major contributor to it's creation. It's human nature to want more, so you ain't changin that. The labor force will always want more, but if the entitlists could see the benefit of earning the money over sitting on their duff and being given the money, that would solve some of the problem.

Like I said, otherwise, they can burn.

Bottom line is they make more money not working. Either make it attractive to work or sit and whine about it for another 5-10 years.

I could not have staged this.

The wife and I were Listen to the 2PM Radio News on this story the wife I had to park the car from laughing so hard.

The reporter was interviewing a young worker.
An this is pretty close to what he said and how he sounded.

We'zzzz, Gonna Get'z the fifth-eeen dollaows, We'zzzz earneded it, or We'zzz not-ta-gonna work you szz....

I wish someone would post the audio.
It is a classic example of poor verbal communication skills and how such poor communication skills can limit any person to low paying basic jobs.

BTW: SEIU is involved in the organization of this movement.

I have a better idea. Drop welfare/other entitlements to less that a minimum wage job. That too will make work more attractive, AND have the benefit of not raising inflation, like artificially inflating wages does.

Why do these idiots (and the many liberals who support them) think it's a good idea to have a larger number of dollars in your pocket if the total value of those dollars is lower?

Who will be next?

Convenience store clerks? Hotel lobby clerks? The guys changing your oil at the oil and lube place? Grocery store cashiers?

The list is endless of people who COULD demand higher paying jobs!! But the bottom line is, it will be ALL OF US that get screwed!! We will pay higher prices for EVERYTHING and the prices are already outrageous!!

You know nocnoc the only

You know nocnoc the only thing missing from your post is "yes sir masser" at the end. Maybe they were playing a clip from Roots and got that interview mixed up with it. I'm almost certain in fact, since it's fairly easy to do in this day and age. Makes for a good laugh though, I guess. In fact i'm laughing so hard I could barely type this.

At any rate I definitely don't feel they're being reasonable with their demands. As was mentioned earlier Georgia is a right to work state and they can fire you for having on the wrong perfume. I suggest they re-think their plan since $0.00 is far less than the $10.00 or so they're complaining about. We live in a dumbed down society and education is no longer valued. You see more jobs posted for skilled positions that don't even require a degree, since technology and software have made these jobs far easier. Pretty soon we'll have people walking around with degrees applying for fast food jobs. Oh wait we already do.

pantherluvcik - I agree

The language skills of the person being interviewed sounded like a old movie stereotype being played out.

I thought we had progressed pass this point with 40+ years of a equal education system that teaches the same language skills to every student in our schools.

But we heard it, and putting it in context along with his demands for $15.00 p/h or what is likely a 100% increase in pay a week, We both say Like Hell and started laughing.

The guy, if he was a real employee, should be thankful a person hired him given his limited communicative skills. Because as and employee he is limited use employee. He will be confined to back room/areas job tasks. He will never be an order taker, a customer facing person less he learn common language skills. Most likely he will never progress to supervisor or management levels until he demonstrates a clear ability to communicate too all customers, staff and the franchise owner.

In my opinion Ebonics will never be a Main Stream US Business Language. http://www.domenicfamily.net/kevin/ebonics.html
