After 32 years in business, Aiken’s West Side Bowery restaurant will close its doors for the final time Aug. 31.

Mellow Mushroom will take the place of the Bowery at 151 Bee Lane in The Alley, and it expects to open by February, according to a post on the restaurant’s Evans Facebook page Monday.

“Very happy to announce we will be opening our third Mellow (Mushroom) location in the CSRA in beautiful downtown Aiken, S.C.,” the post said before wishing West Side Bowery owner Sam Erb a happy retirement.

According to the Bowery’s Web site, the pub was established in 1981 in what used to be a horse stable.

South Carolina state Rep. Bill Taylor took to Twitter to salute the Aiken staple.

“So long to an Aiken eatery,” he said. “Aiken Alley is changing!”

Erb and Mellow Mushroom owner Shawn Ledford could not be reached Monday.

Oh, wow

Losing part of what makes Aiken. Aiken. Hope this is because Sam is just ready to retire or he got a deal he could not refuse.

Bowery Press Information

KSL, Sam is retiring after 32 years of business.

Aiken Downtown Development and I both sent information to local media, including the Augusta Chronicle, regarding yesterday's 3p press conference at the Bowery last Friday. WRDW, WAGT, WJBF, WFXG, The Aiken Standard, The Metro Spirit and Buzz on Biz made the effort to attend. WGAC covered the story remotely and Austin Rhodes did a 12 minute live interview between 4:30p and 5p. Your story from 8:39p last night states that you "could not reach" Sam or Shawn for comment, and relied on a Facebook posting for your story content. Every other news organization who wanted to reach them, did. If you would like to speak with either party please call me at 706-294-2850.

I grew up in Aiken and have eaten at the Bowery since they opened. Up Your Alley has been closed for years. To me the food quality and service declined over time.A good time to close.

Too bad

It was a fine restaurant with a very good menu. Nothing against Mellow Mushroom, but Aiken really doesn't need a pizza joint....

Maybe not an addtional pizza place,

But it will be nice to have a Mellow Mushroom, another successful restaurant chain out of a GT education.

I don't disagree with your comment about the downward direction Up Your Alley seemed to take.

Look CG

2 thumbs for mentioning the fact that 3 succesful restaurant chains were started by people who went to GT. LOL

Here is the proof!

Chick-fil-a. 237 locations

Waffle House. 165 locations

Mellow Mushroom. 120 locations

Really, no thumbs down I promise, but

I can't find anything associating Chick fl a to GT. In Truett Cathy's Bio, there is no mention of GT and his son, Dan, went to Ga. Southern.

Waffle House

No mention of founders attending GT. Mellow, just says three college students, so maybe so.

Yes, but way more Gamecocks

Yes, but way more Gamecocks started successful businesses.

Here's the proof!
McDonald's 17,045 Locations
PF Chang's 1,034 Locations
Hess Service Stations 2,476 Locations

....

Of course, I'm kidding... But my point is you can come up with any sort of "proof" without citing a reference. (c;
And no, I didn't thumb anything up or down, I just think it's silly.

I'm sorry to see the Bowery go because we really enjoyed sitting on the patio on a warm Southern evening having drinks. However, we're thrilled to get Mellow Mushroom in Aiken. It will keep my wife and I from driving to Augusta every Friday night for our favorite pizza. It's one more reason for us to never have to go to Augusta for anything.
