SAVANNAH, Ga. — President Barack Obama used his televised interview with Jay Leno to slip in a plug for three Southeastern states seeking federal funds to deepen the waterways cargo ships navigate to reach their ports.

Appearing Tuesday on NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” the president told Leno that U.S. ports on the East and Gulf coasts need deeper harbors to stay competitive as the Panama Canal finishes a major expansion in 2015 that will give supersized cargo ships a shortcut between the U.S. and Asia.

Obama mentioned three specific ports that proponents say need deeper harbors: Charleston, S.C., Jacksonville, Fla., and Savannah, Ga.

Curtis Foltz, executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority, says the ports in all three states risk losing access to growing export markets overseas if they can’t accommodate larger ships.

Obama/Leno

The Tonight is and has always been a comedy/entertainment show. The president discussing national policies like this, in that venue gives a clear indication that he's more concerned with his image than with the job at hand. On the same show (Aug 6), while embassies all over the Arab world were in a crisis, he used The Tonight Show to update the American people about the situation. If we're to get the latest news from the White House on Leno's show, he should at least have Michelle give the same news on The View so the people that don't stay up all night glued to the TV can stay just as misinformed.

Laser

Obama has told us he "needs to focus like a laser" on job creation. Well, the states were ready to begin dredging a decade ago. The only thing standing in their way was environmental permits and federal money. Obama could have delivered the permits and the money in 2009 (where has all the stimulus gone? gone to unions, every one.) and jobs would have been there and the deep ports would be functional today. Instead, Obama dithered. That's all he does.

Geographical Fail!

Mr. Obama seems to have missed US Geography class. I guess his "phantom" ivy league education wasn't up to par and/or his teleprompter wasn't present for his Leno appearance. What a maroon he is.

Here is his EXACT quote from the Leno show.

"If we don’t deepen our ports all along the Gulf — places like Charleston, South Carolina, or Savannah, Georgia, or Jacksonville, Florida — if we don’t do that, those ships are going to go someplace else. And we’ll lose jobs. Businesses won’t locate here."

For all the obama lovers, here's the video clip for your enjoyment. Listen for yourself. http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/08/07/did-you-catch-the-presidents-...

Now here's what's even worse. The AP doesn't even call him out on his failure to understand basic US Geography. If it was ANYONE else but obama they would be rolling in the aisles and calling him a moron.

Now here's what's hilarious. Obama is worried about jobs?! Seriously? Given the fact that his precious obamacare has killed hundreds of thousands of jobs I just can't take him seriously. But then again, who does?

If it cost a half billion

If it cost a half billion dollars to deepen a port to super port status, why not limit the number of ports deepened? What's the difference if Savannah is left out of the mix? The fact is goods landed in J-ville and Charleston will still find the way to Atlanta.

Billions of dollars to the Ga economy in lost jobs and tax revenue. Over a thousand trucks a day pull out of the Savannah Port Auth. that's not counting the trains made up of 100 cars per that usually run 3 to 4 a day with goods from and to there nor all the support jobs that come into the equation. Just imagine losing half the population of Savannah, all of Port Wentworth and Garden City as well as most of Rincon, and Springfield as well as a good portion of Sylvania and Statesboro. Then of course there Ft Stewart, and Hunter Army Airfield who if there's a need will rely on the Port there as well as the rail lines in and out of there! That's the difference.

owens, it is not a matter of rooting against but being smart enough to recognize a president who has no clue what he is doing. Being a community organizer does not necessarily make a good president

Cold Beer said, "Billions of dollars to the Ga economy in lost jobs and tax revenue."

See that's the Port's Authority standard line. I don't buy it for one minute. The business is NOT being lost. It is simply coming in from another port 100 miles north or south. It still has to end up in Atlanta or other location in Georgia. You show me a study that shows the effect considering the proximity of the other two ports. Every port authority or airport authority comes up with similar figures to justify their existence when the truth is shipping to or from nearby locations changes little and saves hundreds of millions.

As far as national security and Ft. Stewart, Savannah harbor at its present depth has worked well in the past. Smaller ships are not limited by present day canals and harbors over the world.

Obama and changes

I gave looked at the good and bad of many Presidents over the years. President Obama is as human as the next man or woman, the situations that this man has had to deal with and the adversaries he has had more than tolerate is a great accomplishment in itself.

There was no way President Obama would have been able to save as many troops lives as he did, stop the economy from crashing (which this country has never seen a true economy crash. If you want to see a true crash read up on East Germany after WWII)and make Corporate America become responsible for their actions. The President did what no other President has ever did and that is allow us the people run this country. The tax payers made the decisions that affected the bail outs, finding common respect for one another, and voicing our opinions so All of Government would hear.

Now if that is failure on our President, then maybe some of you must think what you have is supposed to be given to you and not worked for. For the rest of us, I feel we all agree we are the United States of America and not England.

Here is what the idiot

Here is what the idiot said.
OBAMA: I don’t know. As you know, for the last three years, I’ve said, let’s work together. Let’s find a financing mechanism and let’s go ahead and fix our bridges, fix our roads, sewer systems, our ports. You know, the Panama Canal is being widened so that these big supertankers can come in. Now, that will be finished in 2015. If we don’t deepen our ports all along the Gulf — places like Charleston, South Carolina, or Savannah, Georgia, or Jacksonville, Florida — if we don’t do that, those ships are going to go someplace else. And we’ll lose jobs. Businesses won’t locate here.
Just an FYI, Mr. President: according to Google Maps, Charleston, South Carolina, Savannah, Georgia, Jacksonville, Florida are all located on the east coast along the Atlantic Ocean.

The reported for AP should

The reported for AP should get it right "the East and Gulf coasts need deeper harbors" was never mentioned. He said Gulf and mentioned East Coast ports. Quit covering for Obamas lack of knowledge.
Leebraxjr..Just because "other presidents did it" does not mean to continue the problem by this current one. Until you liberals understand two wrongs don't make a right this Country is doomed, if it isn't already. Obama has been, and continues to be, a laughing matter World wide. What Republican President has went on a comedy show to give his "State of the Union" address? The guy is a sick joke on us..

Associated Press is Criminally Biased

Web readers are missing the much longer print article as usual, and in that article the Assoc. Press put in a "save" for our president. They added, in parentheses, "and in" before naming the Atlantic coast ports.

In the same interview, he said this (not reported in the print article) "They’re athletes, they’re there to compete, and if Russia wants to uphold the Olympic spirit, then every judgment should be made on the track, or in the swimming pool, or on the balance beam, and people’s sexual orientation shouldn’t have anything to do with it." Um, those competitions are only part of summer olympics.

Dan Quayle was ridiculed and run out of politics for misspelling 'tomato'.
