Bill Kirby, The Augusta Chronicle's online news director and a columnist, has been named interim publisher of The Columbia County News-Times.

A search is underway to fill the position permanently, Atkins said.

Kirby, The Augusta Chronicle’s online news director and a columnist, served as News-Times publisher and editor from 1998 to 2001, when Morris Communications acquired the property. During that time, the newspaper won more than 40 statewide journalism awards and was twice judged the best large weekly newspaper by the Georgia Press Association.

Kirby, a Columbia County resident for more than 20 years, will continue to write his regular column for The Chronicle.
