The Augusta metro unemployment rate dropped half a percentage point in March, the Georgia Labor Department reported Thursday.

At 8 percent, the area’s unemployment is lower than the state rate, which was 8.4 percent in March.

The number of jobs in metro Augusta increased to 215,000, up by 1,100 from 213,900 in February. Most of the growth came in leisure and hospitality; professional and business services; and trade, transportation and warehousing, along with mining, logging, and construction, the state reported.

In the six-county area, only Burke County saw an increase from February.

Columbia County was the lowest in the area at 6.1 percent. Only five other counties in Georgia reported a lower rate.

Both Aiken and Edgefield counties were below the South Carolina rate of 8.4 percent, according to the state’s Department of Employment and Workforce.
