An Augusta commercial real estate executive is up for election to a multi-state regional bank board on Thursday.

One of the items to be discussed during the Synovus Financial Corp. shareholders meeting will be the inclusion of Barry Storey to its board of directors.

Storey, 53, is a founding partner of Hull Storey Gibson Companies, one of the largest retail mall owners in the nation.

“Our board will benefit tremendously from Barry’s business expertise,” said Kessel Stelling, also an Augusta native, who is chairman and CEO of Synovus, . “In addition to building a successful real estate development company, he is a highly respected professional and community leader who will contribute greatly to the shaping of our company’s strategic direction.”

The regional bank, based in Columbus, Ga., has 29 divisions and 280 offices in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Florida and Tennessee.

Synovus operates AFB&T, which has two branches in Augusta. Storey is already a member of the advisory board of AFB&T.

Hull Storey Gibson Companies, headquartered on Interstate Parkway in Augusta, was founded in 1992 and owns 13 million square feet of retail strip centers and enclosed malls throughout the Southeast.

Storey is a graduate of the University of Georgia and serves as an advisory trustee of the University of Georgia Foundation and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business. He is also a director of the Community Foundation of the Central Savannah River Agency.

Two Synovus directors have reached the mandatory retirement age for Synovus directors and will not be reelected, including H. Lynn Page and Frank Brumley, who served as lead director for the last two years.
