University Hospital will break ground Wednesday on construction of its new hospital in McDuffie County.

The ceremony is set for 2 p.m. at the site of the new hospital, 2460 Washington Road, NE, in Thomson.

The $30 million, 68,000-square-foot hospital will initially have 25 private inpatient rooms with the ability to expand to 100 beds, according to a news release from University Health Care System.

Other features include three operating rooms and an emergency department that includes trauma and cardiac rooms, standard exam rooms and an area for non-critical, fast-track care. There will be a lighted heliport outside the emergency department, an imaging department with a CT scanner and an on-site lab.

Construction is expected to be completed in late 2014.

The hospital replaces McDuffie Regional Medical Center.
