December unemployment claims in Augusta lower than a year ago

  • Follow Local Business

The number of initial claims for unemployment insurance in the Augusta metro area was lower in December than the year before, according to data released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor.

There were 2,125 claims in December, up from 1,644 in November, but lower than 2,541 in December 2011.

Similar results were seen statewide, with a greater number of people seeking unemployment from November, but fewer than in December 2011.

Most of the increase came in manufacturing, construction, wholesale trade, and administrative and support services.

The other story says the number of jobs is down in the Augusta area. So I have to assume people have stopped looking for work and their unemployment has run out.
