Augusta lost 800 jobs in December

  • Follow Local Business

Small declines in retail, professional services and other job sectors resulted in a loss of 800 jobs in the Augusta metro area for December, the Georgia Department of Labor reported Thursday.

The monthly survey of employers, which does not include the people who are self-employed in the six-county metro area, reported the drop from November to December.

The labor department said there were 206,400 jobs in December, down from 207,200 in November. The metro area lost 300 jobs in retail and 200 in professional and business services. There were also slight declines in state government, education and manufacturing, with slight gains in local government and transportation.

Compared with December 2011, the metro area had 2,100 fewer jobs.

All you have to do is look at

All you have to do is look at the empty storefronts and strip malls. That tells you more than any government bureau can ever say. And if there's empty stores at the mall and Augusta Exchange, that's a better economic indicator than anything.

Palmeto1008. I can't do

Palmeto1008.... I can't do anything about the retailers laying off seasonal workers during the holiday season...

Corgimom.... The stats are for metro Augusta, and not solely Richmond County. The Augusta Exchange area(Tin Drum Cafe, Tutti Frutti expansion, Home 2 Suites by Hilton, Residence Inn by Marriott, Dunkin Donuts/Which Wich, Yotopia, Medac expansion/70 jobs)& Augusta mall(Soma, Charming Charlie, Buca di Beppo, P.S. From Aeropostale, Francesca Collections, Pink & Blue store) are doing very good.

Allhnas.... Be patient... Starbucks/Rockwood/Bridgestone/NSA and expect for the Augusta Corporate Park to make some announcements.
