Discount grocer Aldi opening Jan. 31 in Augusta

  • Follow Business

An Aldi discount grocery store will open in two weeks in Augusta.

The store at 227 Bobby Jones Expressway will open at 9 a.m. Jan. 31, according to a store spokesman.

The grocery offers more than 1,400 store-brand products, including produce and meats. This will be the second area Aldi store, after the 2009 opening of a store at 2510 Whiskey Road in Aiken.

Aldi differs from traditional grocery stores in that customers must deposit a quarter to use shopping carts – which is refunded when the cart is returned – and bring their own bags. The store accepts only cash and debit cards to avoid credit card processing fees.

Store hours will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to
7 p.m. Sundays.

Officials previously said the store would employee 10 people. It was built on the former site of a Golden Corral restaurant, which moved next door.

Aldi

That's the best news I've read in a long time! Welcome Aldi and may you prosper and people remember to get their quarters back - if not, somebody can make a living there - comparing to the local stores where folks are too lazy to move their carts. May be educational to teach them HOW!!

Love the one near us

They don't have a huge selection but the prices are better....funny thing....you don't see lost buggies all around the parking lot either...a quarter does the trick!

A South Side group

that frequented the Aiken store got together about 2 years ago and started contacting Aldi's about locating to US-25 & Windsor Spring.
After exchanging a few email and phone calls things started rolling.

For current obvious business reasons, they decided to go West Side instead of Southeast South because they saw the most success there for an anchor store. In the long run we are happy to have reduce our out travel distance by 2/3's.

This a great discount store and the fact it is opening across the street from Wally World should be a good indicator how good their prices and business model is.

BTW: If and when they ask your Zip Code at the checkout, remember to give them South Side Zips.

Went to one in Charlotte....

I wasn't impressed at all..doubtful I would drive 20 miles to buy off brand products. The waste of gas would even it out anyways. Glad to see a new business though even though I thought that was Martinez not Augusta...

As a tightwad

I am looking forward to a no-frills way to reduce the effeccts of rising costs of groceries.

And I have a drawer full of those plastic bags to use.

This may be one exception to my shopping South of the Gordon Highway rule.

David Parker - Agreed Martinez proper, not AUG

But think bigger game plan.

I keep hearing of quiet political plans to lay the ground work to merge Richmond and Columbia Co. Kind of like what they did to really screw up Atlanta and surround counties, in order to get in line for Federal $$$$.

I need not remain any one, there is already a lot of business growth on the border. Plus some people are quietly discussing a pipe dream study/plan for a Mass transit system called MATA - Martinez Augusta Transit Authority.

I even heard the pun already used.
"What the public doesn't know now, doesn't MATA."

I have been shopping at ALDI stores in SC for over 8 years. Have always found their products to be great. So happy that I don't have to drive to Aiken or Greenwood anymore!! Plus they have a wonderful selection of German wines!!!

Could start with 30907 annexation? Boil the frog theology. ARC needs revenue, and they need it bad for its CBD, schools, sewers, roads, bridges, mismanagement and political thievery, etc. Atlanta is not the only place in the USA where bedroom communities are ask to pony up funds for inter city social welfare failures. Another form of wealth redistribution. And we want be able to stop it. Citizens in ARC could not stop annexation or consolidation within their own county.

The government knows where the revenue resides and they have one function. To tax and tax and tax.

30906 or 30815 would be the two best zips to use to promote South Side.

The address is not important!

This is another reason I tend to laugh when the same few people on the Chronicle start comparing the counties in the metro against each other. The new residents/tourist can't even tell the difference when driving along Stevens Creek, Furys Ferry, Washington rd, Bobby Jones, etc. Then you have large corporations who look at the entire metro Augusta area and the CSRA. The faster all the counties learn to work together the faster the metro/CSRA will move along.

Does the address really matter? Especially when the residents of Martinez go out of town, and tell people the live in Augusta/metro Augusta/Augusta area.

The address on the ALDI website is Augusta, and not Martinez. The grocery store is located right near the county line. Plus it's only an address, because Martinez is not a real city.

Grovetown leaders tried to claim the Steak & Shake(Augusta address), and it's nowhere near the city limits of Grovetown.

You are wrong...

The store is in Martinez. I worked at a place closer to the county line and also had a wreck in front of Rick's Paint and Body that was responded to by Columbia County police. You are the one that worries more about towns than anyone on here. You constantly remind all the posters of things that are AUGUSTA and nothing else unless you want to use the surrounding counties to your benefit. Still waiting on those SAT test score comparisons between Richmond and Columbia counties.

Gnip Gnop... When did I say

Gnip Gnop... When did I say the store was located in Augusta? I clearly said the address on their website is 'Augusta'. The same few people love attack my comments, but don't even read the entire thing first.

http://www.yellowmap.de/partners/AldiSued2/Html/Poi.aspx?SessionGuid=ca9...

I also never mention the surrounding counties unless people take shots at Richmond County first. I find it ironic how multiple posters continuously gang up on Richmond County, but they can't stand for one person to say anything about the other counties.

GnipGnop... I think you should know if we compare SAT scores over the last few years(five-six). Three of of the top five SAT scores come from Richmond County schools. Westside beat Evans almost every year in SAT/ACT scores.

2009 SAT scores
1. Davidson RC(#1 SAT score the state of GA) 1744
2. Lakeside CC 1600
3. AR Johnson RC 1539

7. Harlem CC 1402

The truth will set you free!

Don't blame me, because you wanted to make your own assumptions.

The magnet schools only pick the students who choose to apply. Compare any of the top Columbia County students against the students in the ARC IB program.

I just commented how Westside(non magnet) beat out Evans over the last few years(five-six)in SAT/ACT scores..

Josey, Glenn Hills, Butler? Quality of schools means ALL schools. It doesn't mean you can pick the 2 best schools out and compare them to every other school. Geesh man...really?

I figure all is good if the CSRA can succeed and enjoy success. I'm aware of the wedge that exists between the ARC and CC. I'll never quite comprehend how/why it was established there. Just bites the big one that we grow up in this area and it becomes part of your culture and before you know it, you just accept it, not even knowing why or how.

back on topic: ALDI will have beer/wine or at least they applied for the license
