The Columbia County Convention and Visitors Bureau has a new leader.

Board Chairman Rick Crawford announced Monday that Randy DuTeau has signed on as the new executive director.

“We just seemed to have the same goals and ideals,” Crawford said. “He’s just the kind of person we’re looking for, just seemed to be a perfect fit.”

DuTeau, currently the events and sports development manager for the Augusta Sports Council, replaces Beda Johnson, who resigned in October.

“I knew the opportunity existed and I wanted to jump on it,” DuTeau said.

DuTeau said he just finished organizing the fourth annual ESi Ironman 70.3 Augusta triathlon and will see through the Georgia-lina Bike Summit on Oct. 19-21. He is ready
to assume his new position the week of Oct. 22.

DuTeau said leaving the sports council after seven years will be sad and that the job was really gratifying.

“Doing something where you’re strictly there to enhance and make the community better, I’m really blessed to be able to do that,” DuTeau said. “To have the opportunity to do that directly in my home, the county where I live, I think it’s such an awesome opportunity.”

Crawford said DuTeau’s experience attracting events, knowledge of the county’s facilities and his contacts made him a natural choice.

DuTeau said he plans to look into all that the county offers, researching what others see as the vision for the county and acquainting himself with the strategic plans of the bureau, the county’s chamber of commerce and the county development authority.

The visitors bureau recently relocated to be with the chamber and development authority in the former health department building at 1000 Business Blvd.

“The relationship has to be symbiotic,” DuTeau said of working with the county’s other tourism and economic development entities. “Once we all get in sync, we’ll only be limited by our imaginations.”
