Initial claims for unemployment for those in the Augusta metro area declined 32 percent in August, according to data from the Georgia Department of Labor.

The labor department said Thursday that 1,620 people filed for jobless benefits for the first time in August, down from 2,400 in July.

The August numbers were also lower than the prior year, where 1,966 initial claims were filed.

Most Georgia cities experienced a decline in jobless claims last month.
