Development Authority continues work on master plan for Augusta Corporate Park

The Development Authority of Richmond County is seeking input for its master plan for Augusta Corporate Park.

The authority issued a request for proposals from engineering firms to determine the best use of the land, which measures 1,800 acres, said Walter Sprouse, the authority’s executive director, at Thursday’s board meeting.

Plans to extend the road through the park, build water and sewer lines to handle the water supply and wastewater at the site, and develop utilities are needed, he said.

“We’ve got to figure out how we’re going to get the wastewater back up the hill,” he said.

The authority is also seeking assistance with dividing the parcels “to have the maximum best use of the property for industrial purposes,” Sprouse said.

In August, the authority received bids from three engineering companies and was waiting for several more.

Starbucks Coffee Co. is the first tenant at Augusta Corporate Park, which is off Mike Padgett Highway. The company will spend about $172 million building a plant to make ready-to-drink beverages, VIA Ready Brew and components for its Frappuccino drinks. The plant should open in 2014.

Georgia Power has identified an 11-acre space it will occupy at the site, which was donated to the authority in 1993.

The authority approved Starbucks’ request to change the name of Bolton Parkway at Augusta Corporate Park to Valencia Way. Valencia Way will be named after Don Valencia, the man who invented a product being made at the Starbucks plant.

The authority had permission from Hubert Bolton’s family. Starbucks will honor him with a plaque.
