Construction over budget for Augusta Regional Airport project

  • Follow Local Business

Construction changes at the Augusta Regional Airport’s new general aviation terminal, which is now 5 percent over budget, are costing an additional $149,000.

The Augusta Aviation Commission approved the project’s ninth change order Thursday. Executive Director Gary LeTellier said the airport was liable for the items on the latest contract modification.

The original contract, awarded to Choate Construction Co. on June 30, 2011, was for $5.05 million. Previous contract modifications totaled $222,748.

The latest change order includes $46,538 for construction delays, which resulted when contractors arrived on site to begin work and found the existing airport terminal was not cleared for demolition. Airport administrators said they were waiting on temporary trailers to move into, which caused the delay.

Other items on the contract modification were for costs associated with material testing, soil replacement and interior building finishes such as paint and cabinets.

An additional change order of $50,000 for poured concrete is still being negotiated with the contractor. The airport said the concrete quality did not meet specifications.

While the concrete claim is disputed, a retainer fee totaling about $200,000 is being withheld.

money. Contracts are as "nebulous" as the morning fog over the Savannah in River City. When you have a blank check on the Bank of Unrepresented Taxpayers, the sky is the limit. Completion dates, cost overruns and project planning and management are non existent.

cha-ching, cha-ching,

cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching. Change orders is where commercial builders make their money. It pays to have your ducks in a row BEFORE you put the project out for bids. Contractors LOVE to see you coming with change orders.

Airport name

Does anyone remember the details on how and why Bush Field was renamed Augusta Regional Airport?

Wikipedia says how it came to be named Bush Field and that name was changed from Bush Field to Augusta Regional Airport in 2000 but not why. Probably a marketing ploy. Wonder if dr sneeze of MCG was involved?

Re: Airport name

Bush Field wasn't exactly renamed Augusta Regional Airport. Unless there was a change that I missed, the actual name of the airport is still Augusta Regional Airport at Bush Field. I think Augusta Regional Airport only includes either the commercial aviation facilities or the general aviation facilities out at Bush Field.
