The number of first-time filers for unemployment insurance in the Augusta metro area increased in July, according to data released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor.

There were 2,400 claims for unemployment in July, up from 1,999 in June. The number was about 9 percent lower than July 2011, however.

Most metro areas in Georgia saw an increase in July, the state reported. Albany, Dalton and Savannah were the only metro areas to see decreases.
