New Ward's furniture store opens on Washington Road

  • Follow Business

Ward’s Furniture & Mattress Outlet has opened on Washington Road, becoming the second local furniture store for the owner.

Sheldon Ward, of Crawfordville, Ga., opened the discount furniture and bedding store at 3120 Washington Road at the end of June.

He also owns Ward’s Furniture Surplus Outlet at 3511 Wrightsboro Road, which offers different inventory, that opened four years ago.

The 20,000-square-foot store on Washington Road has two employees. The location had been vacant for over a year, he said.

“This store was a great location. It’s the old Ethan Allen store, so it was set up for a furniture store to start with,” Ward said.

Ward remodeled the building, put in new lights and carpet, and removed the ceiling tiles.

He decided to open a second furniture store in Augusta because he wanted to appeal to customers that don’t travel frequently to Wrightsboro Road. He also felt the local market for discount furniture was underserved.

Many items at Ward’s Furniture & Mattress Outlet are discontinued, one-of-a-kind, closeouts and bulk purchases.

Ward said that he makes purchases in bulk, imports furniture in containers and buys from furniture factory showrooms, which allows him to sell items at or below wholesale prices.

Years ago, Ward owned five Oak Lovers & Patio stores across Georgia, including locations in Augusta.

After owning the stores for 15 years, he closed them because oak merchandise wasn’t selling well and decided to refocus his efforts on the Augusta market, he said.
