'Chronicle' names new executive editor; VP role for English part of multimedia future

 

John Gogick has been named executive editor of The Augusta Chronicle, succeeding Alan English, who has been promoted to vice president of audience.

Gogick, most recently the director of content and digital operations, has held a number of key newsroom management positions over the past 17 years, including serving more than a decade as news editor.

“Since coming to The Chronicle in January, I have been impressed by both John’s commitment to news-gathering and his journalism values. He has proven to be an effective manager at finding solutions to delivering more digitally while caring for the news experience readers expect in print,” said Dana Atkins, the president of The Augusta Chronicle.

“I am honored to be asked to lead the newsroom in this era of change,” Gogick said. “It is an exciting time to be in news with the opportunities presented at the intersection of news values with new technology.”

Gogick and English have worked closely to bring innovations in digital publishing to the community that include iPad and smartphone apps, a modern Web site, and interaction through social media, blogs and databases.

“Those of us who have watched John succeed over the years at the challenges of producing and editing a daily newspaper know he will continue The Chronicle’s long tradition of successful editors,” said William S. Morris III, the chairman and chief executive officer of Morris Com­muni­cations Co. and publisher of The Augusta Chronicle.

Gogick will report to English, who after three years as executive editor takes a new job as vice president of audience as part of The Chronicle’s transformation into a digital-first multimedia company. English will oversee expansions of digital products and services in addition to development of the print portfolio.

“This is an exciting time for both journalism and The Chronicle as we continue to develop new ways to better serve and inform our readers and customers,” English said. “Ensuring the future of The Augusta Chronicle in all its forms, as well as exploring new ventures, is my mission.”

The goal of The Chronicle as a community media company is to be integral in the lives of its customers, he said. As vice president of audience, English will push that effort to provide both news and commercial information initiatives.

He and Nate Edwards, recently named the vice president of sales, will lead the Augusta operation into the future.

“Without question, Alan has been a leading team member putting The Chronicle media team into positive and offensive position against industry trends,” Atkins said. “We see a bright future with Alan and Nate growing our audiences and revenues.”
