Augusta businesses will be able to sell package alcohol on Sundays, starting this Sunday, after the Augusta Commission granted final approval to an ordinance allowing businesses that have package alcohol licenses to sell on Sundays at no additional cost.

The vote was 7-2, with commissioners Bill Lockett and Alvin Mason opposed. Mason voted for the measure on first reading last week, but all other votes stayed the same Wednesday for second reading.

Stores will be able to sell package alcohol between 12:30 and 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

Augusta’s license and inspections office has prepared a memo to send to retailers alerting them that the sales will be permitted on Sundays, Licensing and Inspections Director Rob Sherman said, adding that it would be sent after the commission’s approval.

Augusta voters approved a referendum allowing Sunday package alcohol sales during the Super Tuesday primary March 6.
